We had to read My Freshman Year by Rebekah Nathan. The story is about a cultural anthropologist that is a professor at AnyU. As a cultural anthropologist you're very interested in culture and it brought to Nathan's attention the current societies college students. She feels college students these days seem more lazy and have lack of ambition, and she wondered why? So she conducted a study well "Fieldwork" because she enrolled herself as a student at AnyU. She lived in the dorms, had a meal plan, and went to classes just like a typical freshman. Welcome week arrives and there is plenty of activities and things going out that she didn't even know the university offered or how to even navigate throughout the university. She felt shocked because how out of element she felt. Nathan conducted interviews of students and what they do on the daily at the university. One girl was in the ROTC program named Casey, who got up at 5 in the morning to do her early workouts. Casey's days are so busy that she had to drop her meal plan because she has no time. She fathomed the idea of joining a sorority but knew she couldn't go through with it because she has no time already. Another student Nathan met was Ossie. Ossie is like any other college student i know that really doesn't know what he wants to do with his life. He changed his major 7 times. He also stated that if it wasn't for his friends he would be at another school, and thats another thing i hear ALL the time. I even said that. I know if i left this school i would miss my friends and memories here more than anything, so i just couldn't leave. Its amazing how much this article i could relate to. Between moving in the dorms, the actives, and daily class struggles. It makes me feel like I'm doing it right. Every person Nathan shared in this story was different and had a different story to them. I feel like professors feel like students are all the same, and don't do anything other than focus on their studies when there is so much more. Students work on and off campus. Students have interest groups and club. Students have sports. Students volunteer. Students have responsibilities. Yes, they came to get an education, but they need to make their education worth while. I loved reading this piece and it was an interesting read that a professor took on become a student at her own university.
